The first version of AutoCAD did not run on Intel-compatible x86 machines and was actually written in Assembly. It was later released with the Microsoft operating system, and Microsoft C# and Visual Basic (2003), which are compatible with C# and Visual Basic.

In 2005, Autodesk introduced AutoCAD LT, which is a limited version of AutoCAD, supporting a subset of its capabilities. Autodesk also produces Autodesk Inventor, a commercial 2D CAD application that supports both 2D drafting and 3D modeling.

In 2012 Autodesk rebranded the product line as Autodesk Revit, an abbreviation of Revit Design. Revit Design is a suite of products that support architectural and engineering design, including tools for design optimization, visualization, construction documentation, and presentation. It was formerly known as BIM360, which stands for Building Information Modeling.

In the 2014 Autodesk ReCap program, Autodesk announced its intention to eventually phase out AutoCAD in favor of a subscription model. This change of AutoCAD's business model was announced in May 2015. AutoCAD 2018 was the last version of AutoCAD to be marketed by Autodesk.

Ascend Applications (not to be confused with Trimble) acquired the AutoCAD brand and product lines from Autodesk in March 2016.

History

AutoCAD began development in the early 1970s, under the leadership of Dennis Detwiller and Bill Walsworth. Detwiller and Walsworth had been colleagues at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) in Palo Alto, California. Initially, the main focus of CAD development was the drafting component. A user-interface team was hired in 1972. Detwiller and Walsworth joined Autodesk in 1973 to help with CAD development.

At the time, x86-based microcomputers were just beginning to emerge, and so the first versions of AutoCAD were written in assembly. It was the first software application to be written entirely in C. AutoCAD was originally developed as a Windows application that ran on Windows 3.0 and Windows 3.1. Windows 3.1 became the operating system for all new AutoCAD releases.

AutoCAD is also used for modeling, simulation and visualization. The ability to define the modeling process is referred to as parametric modeling.

Visualization using 3D, 2D and surface plotter graphics is provided by many AutoCAD extensions.

Some modeling extensions provide tools for creating parametric 3D models with mathematical functions as parameters, while others allow you to define and edit virtual 3D solids (geometry). Some offer animation and other tools for further development of the 3D model.

The traditional way of creating a model in AutoCAD is based on creating a series of cross-sections of the model, section by section. The information is recorded in a topologically sound file format called DXF (Draft Exchange Format). The file structure is very important, because of the detailed information about the sections and the lines that make them up. Another view of this is a model can be viewed as a collection of sections, and each section is connected to other sections with line connections. The lines are used to represent dimensions, points, and even geometric shapes such as circles, lines, arcs, and splines.

Two types of lines are used: dimensions and standard lines. Dimensions are used to indicate a specific point or line. Lines are used to create lines and arcs.

A typical file is made up of several layers. Each layer can be uniquely identified by the attribute, and each layer is referred to as a sheet. The default layer that holds all the model geometry is called the background. The background is visible by default when the model is created. In some models, each sheet can be hidden or shown. The layers that can be hidden or shown are typically referred to as sheet layers. A number of layers have special purposes. For example, the Header layer can be used to provide a property display of the model. The foreground layer can be used to create and edit dimensions. The rest of the layers are not visible unless a user selects them.

In the Autocad viewer, double-click the Open and Go to Documents option from the file menu and select the.doc file.

If the file you are opening is in the default directory, you can get there by selecting the Open with.... option from the file menu and selecting the AutoCAD Viewer from the list.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the National Quality Forum (NQF) have issued quality measures for total knee arthroplasty (TKA). These measures have not been validated and may not reflect the outcomes that patients most value. The purpose of this study was to investigate patient-reported outcomes following TKA and to determine if these outcomes are associated with CMS and NQF quality measures. We investigated the relationship between CMS- and NQF-reported patient-reported outcomes and CMS- and NQF-reported clinical outcomes following TKA by performing multiple linear regression analysis. The CMS-reported WOMAC pain and physical function subscale scores were significantly associated with the NQF-reported WOMAC pain and physical function subscale scores, but no significant association was found between the CMS-reported WOMAC score and the NQF-reported WOMAC function score. The CMS-reported WOMAC pain subscale score was significantly associated with the NQF-reported WOMAC score, whereas the NQF-reported WOMAC physical function and score were not associated with the CMS-reported WOMAC pain subscale score. In conclusion, patient-reported outcomes are significantly associated with CMS-reported patient-reported outcomes, but not with NQF-reported patient-reported outcomes.
